Transformations

The first step to building empathy is putting ourselves in the experiences of another, especially if that other can’t speak. The 7th graders of Clinton asked themselves what inanimate objects, animals, or fictional characters they would like to be before reading “Hulk Smash!” by Greg Santos. After exploring what a day in the life of someone or something else would be, students wrote poems in those voices. From blackholes to water to cars to phones to watermelon to Pluto, students reflected on the experiences of foods, animals, and things beyond themselves.

or for playing games. If you don’t charge me,
I will die.

volleyball court and it kinda annoys me because
people like to hit me back and forth, I get tired.

and I get tired. I hate when people kick me because
I get deflated and I get angry, mad.

Drift Afnan H.

Pluto,

I’m alone

like the things you hide and never find
again.

I was deducted by those stupid bum-
bums down at the green-blue trash.

I’ll admit, I’m jealous of the green ball of
trash, getting favored by air, sun and
water.

One day, I’ll get revenge on that
green ball piece of life. It will suffer.
(I hate those stupid bum-bums though.)

I’ll still drift.
For now.

Blank Poetry Paper Brandon M.

Being blank all
the time, never
being filled to my
max potential, having
blank lines is horrible.
More of a blank paper
than a poetry paper.
The blankness is sickening
miles and miles of lines
that yearn to be written on.
A blank piece of paper that
wants poetry written on
it.

Black hole life Umar P.

Life as a black hole is booorrringg
you eat everything and feel so
full. I would rather be a star
it’s so cold and bright.
Even light has a better life.
