“The power of a simile… bridges the gap between the familiar and the unknown, allowing readers to instantly visualize emotions, settings, and character: – Psychology Today.

Boring
I lay in the bed
scrolling and scrolling
time passes like a cheetah
I’m just scrolling, nothing to do
boring
It’s as boring as a fish in a glass bowl
As boring as beige paint
I miss having fun
I miss going out with friends
I’m just lying here
Scrolling, boredom
It’s as boring as waiting for the train.
I sit and think about
Trees tall as skyscrapers
Trees heavier than cars
I sit and think about winds
Winds that sound like they are breathing next to me
Winds that blow faster than planes
Winds that blow in every direction, just like a compass
Ms. Wright, 7th Grade, Group Two
I’m as fast as a cheetah.
Me with eyes bright like stars.
Me with hands quick as lightning.
Me with a brain as busy as bees.
Fighting to the end is like a laptop
overheating, like a battery of a phone.
Fighting to the end is a brain,
determined to win.
Fighting to the end is my body,
scorching like a burning tree
Fighting to the end is a finger-wounded
like a scar on a fighter.
I sit in class thinking…
I am thinking about you like hours think about days
And weeks think about months.
I’m thinking about you like a bird thinks of flying.
Thinking about you like flames thinking of burning
And the radio thinks about music,
like a melody thinks about flowing.
I’m thinking about you like earthworms think about dirt
like dirt thinks about plants.
I’m thinking about you like the stars think about the shining
like the moon thinks about the dark
and the sun thinks about the light.
I’m thinking about you like rainbow paint thinks about mixing
like a leaky faucet thinks about dripping.
Thinking about you like how clouds think about drifting
and shovels think about digging.
Essentially,
I’m thinking about you.
