My life feels like a mountain that I keep climbing even when the path gets steep.

My emotions move like a fighter getting back up after getting knocked down.

My journey is as resilient as a weed growing through the cracks of a sidewalk.

In our fourth poetry session in Ms. Schiffer’s class at Legal Prep, the students watched Dr. Maya Angelou’s “And Still I Rise” performance and observed how it influenced Amanda Gorman’s poem, “The Hill We Climb”.

Scholars then wrote their own short poems to bring light and inspire movement in their community!

Check out freshman poet Isiah’s piece below.

For the first week at Legal Prep, students had the opportunity to share more about who they are by writing the poem, “Where I’m From”. The layout for this poem prompted the students to highlight details of their childhood by incorporating imagery in their work.

This poem comes from Javon, a senior in Ms. Wysinger’s class!
