‘Cheering for me until your throat burns.’: Kindness Poems

Students read the poem, ‘Small Kindnesses’ by Denusha Lameris, and then crafted their own poems on the topic!

“Those of us who are kind and compassionate experience clear benefits to our  well-being and happiness. We may even live longer. Kindness also helps reduce stress and improve our emotional well-being.”-The Kindness Matters Guide via the Mental Health Foundation.

Kindness from You by Caizhi Y.

I’ve been thinking about the way you say “sorry”

when you hurt someone. Or when you say “excuse me”

Instead of bumping into me like a meteor. The way you held the door

Like a gentleman even though you didn’t have to.

The way you support me like a mother bear.

Cheering for me until your throat burns.

The way you guide me up like a balloon

Towards the sun,

The light and happiness of the world.

The way you pick me up

When I hang on a thread

About to fall into the abyss.

Or the way you gave me a pencil

Kindness.

A behavior that

everybody has experienced.

But,

why do we do these actions?

Not everybody has experienced such before.

Which is why people love showing it to others,

which it could be through

gifts,

compliments,

or just a nice silence.

We all show kindness differently,

take it in differently.

A concept that has been shown many times in life.

Kindness,

to a stranger on the street,

to your teacher,

to a friend,

or just yourself.

Afterall,

everybody has experienced kindness at least once.

Such a small act can make a huge change.

Even when you don’t realize.

It can be small but

It’s something to be appreciated.

Say something welcoming

Or do something in return.

It’ll lighten up the mood a bit.

If someone is feeling down,

Try cheering them up

With laughs or talks.

If they don’t want to talk,

Leave them be.

Help someone understand their work

Or team up with them to increase the effort.

Be the one to stand up to a person

Or represent a group.

Speak out for what’s wrong.

People can support you

Or help you with a cause.

They can guide you

And have your back.

They can do this for you if you did this for them.

They can introduce you to something new.

Give information about it,

Help you understand what to do,

Or show you around a place.

Then, you can do it on your own.

Some may become your friend

Or someone you are comfortable with,

And they may feel the same about you.

Both of you can help each other

But don’t rely on one another too often.

Many things shouldn’t be

Taken for granted.

They should be acknowledged

And valued.

Positive acts will not always come your way.
