5th grade time machines

On Thursday Twain 5th graders’ time traveled for their 3rd week of poetry. We discussed ways they we have changed since growing older. Some students have grown taller since last year, other grew a shoe size, and a few students got new eyeglasses.

Together we read the poem “When I Was Six,” by Aimee Nezhukumatahil. In her poem Nezukumatahil uses her five senses: touch, taste, smell, sound, and sight to describe her earliest memories from when she was six years old. My mother waters the tomato & pepper plants/I steal drinks from the penny-taste of the garden hose/ I am six and I am laughing with a mouth full of cashews/ I think nuts is the funniest word I have ever heard/ I break all of my mother’s lipsticks & glue them back together. Students enjoyed the poem and remembered doing some of the same things when they were younger. Especially the line about drinking from the garden hose, I used to do the same things as a kid.

Below are the poems and drawings of students’ memories when they were younger.

When I Was 7 by Layla L.

When I was 7
I touched the crusty soap.
I got bored and ate the soap
like white chocolate, it was good.
I saw bubbles coming out
from my mouth.

I smelled the soapy soap.
I heard the bubbles popping.

Got in trouble by my parents.
They washed my mouth
with soap 🙂

When I was 7 by Karla M.

It was my golden birthday,
I went to Disney World.
We got our hotel. My mom
forced me to take a picture
with Mickey. He touched
my hand, when we took
the picture.

Then my mom took me
on a walk, we stopped
at an ice cream place.
I got a sundae, it was
cold and creamy.

When I was done, we walked
more, then I smelled the
cinnamon rolls. I didn’t want
any though.

We saw Disney princesses.
I got some signatures.

Then it was the last night.
We saw the Cinderella castle
light up and we saw fireworks.

Then it was time to go home.
I heard the laughter and joy
fade away. I will never forget
that moment.

When I Was 9 by Elliana

When I was 9, things were
easier and more fun.
I remember seeing my friends
all online, the endless spamming,
but mainly by me.

I always snuck food in my
room pizza, fires, or just a burger,
to hang out with my friends more.

I remember seeing all my friends
texting, playing Roblox, when
everyone was online after school,
and how people always got along.

The scent of the dusty rug,
the sharpies and markers, where
everyone made our own plays
when they had the chance.

I listened to cringy songs,
that make no sense, but they’re
still similar, and I still listen
to them.

When I am 10, I touched
my moving pencil on my desk,
