Point of View

For week 8 of our Nettelhorst 7th Grade residency, we read and listened to the poem by Rachel Mann titled “#TDOR.”  In this poem, Mann explores fragmented sentences of people asking how best to participate in Trans Day of Remembrance. It is written in 2nd person point of view. We discussed how this poem might have been different if it was written in first person and why would someone choose to write in fragmented, broken sentences such as this. Students were then tasked to write their own 2nd or 3rd person point of view poem, with a bonus of exploring fragmentation! Check out this week’s poems.

"The boards at 8" Emmett D.

A boy named Noah walked to the park

He walked and came upon a statue

At first all he could see was that the statue was dark

Slowly the statue he came close to…

Began to speak directly to him, it was great

Noah was amazed and listened intently

He said listen closely “The Boards at 8”

“What do you mean” Noah said gently

The statue said “I hope that you ate”

“But all I can say Is The boards at 8”

The statue began to go back to place

The boy was confused and started to pace.

The Boards at 8 what can that mean

Maybe at 8 O Clock there will be a scene.

However I must know what “The Boards” means

Noah had to find out he had to see

And just then on the statue landed a bee!

So Noah would look to figure out what

The Boards could mean

"You Hate This Song" Olivia B.

You hate it, it hate You.
Stop it, you can’t stand it.

You don’t like this song,
EW, You hate this song.

It likes You, You don’t
like it, that’s annoying,
Because You hate this song.

Turn it off, forever? Yes
Forever You hate this song.

well I also hate this song,
we can hate it together.

We hate this song, song this
hate we.

"Life" Arnav S.

Someone was born today,
and someone died.

Someone died with a chance the world with their eyes,
Someone lived their life satisfied.

Everyone you’ve felt, seen, heard,
and everyone who you thought was bad or nice,

belong to a planet with life.

Everyone looks back to the past,
and sees how much they have changed,
but the worst part is your can’t relive those
moments,

So maybe we can tip our hats
toward the bright glow of the past, and
move forward to the future in the
road of Life.

"Silence" Blake L.

Stop talking or I’ll give you
a notation! But it wasn’t me.
Go back to your seat!

It wasn’t me! Notation.

"Can you put away..." Annie K.

Did you put away…
How many shoes do you have out?
Did you put away your dinner?

Clean this
organize
that put
away
please.

We keep a clean aesthetic
our things that make our house a
home.
They’re hidden behind walls to keep
clean

Can you put…
why?
What makes it hide?
Why don’t you like it out?
Does it need a
disguise?

Please put away.

"Recess" Elijah N.

Leave me alone, Bro
He won’t stop grabbing me
Stop calling my name
Busy

Stop talking about her
No I’m not asking her
out stop asking who
I like because I’m not
telling you.

"Get Out of Your Room!" Zoe S.

Your dad or mom, is knocking on your bedroom door
painted a boring cream color
“Get out of your room” they say
you interpret that as “Come back to reality”
But sometimes you don’t feel like it
AT ALL
And that’s okay too
But don’t isolate yourself just because you don’t
want to talk to anyone
Try to come out of your shell
Come out of your shell like a crab
On the ocean shore
Be brave and interact with someone even if you
don’t feel like it.
Just be brave.
You can do it.

"He Feels" Art S.

The words came out
of Dad’s mouth,
“I’m proud of you”
Then, he feels accomplished

Everything that was done,
was worth it,
the warmth that
filled him up,
The happiness that grew in him,
it made everything worth it.

He feels happy,
He feels good
He feels great
He feels warm
He feels

"Have the Best Day" Addison K.

In the meaning of a phrase, I
Love You
Often lies so
very many others
Extra ways that you can say,
You are awesome,
Only through the,
Unspoken, spoken words, “Miss you,” “Goodnight.”
