Poems on Poeming

Hello! Last week, I got the chance to hang out with Noel’s 7th and 8th graders for a fun Waters crossover episode. Although students have been writing poems a while, we spent our time breaking down what exactly makes poetry poetry. We discussed some common debates like whether or not music could be considered poetry, or if poems needed to be a certain length to count. After reading “I Don’t Like Poetry” by Joshua Seigal and “Poetry” by Nikki Giovanni, we spent some time brainstorming and crafting our own ars poetica poems.

Ms. Hernandez's 7th Grade

Poetry Aiden A.

I like poetry

It is a nice way to write

Similes, Metaphors,

Alliteration, and Onomatopoeia.

I can write like that.

I like poetry.

Poetry is like a door that escapes

to your mind.

I like poetry.

Poetry makes my

mind write about itself

I like poetry

Poetry is the timeless

thing to tell that

this is good.

I like poetry

Poetry makes my mind go

Wow! and Pow!

It also makes my mind

Wham!

I like poetry.

Ars Poetica Ilora P.

I kinda like poetry. I think it’s cool, but I don’t like writing it.

It’s like a warm and cold breeze on a rainy day.

It’s like being in an empty room with furniture and chairs.

Poetry is peculiar and personal.

It’s like a big bang, kaboom, slap, clash in my face.

Poetry is weird, Poetry is weird

Poetry is weird and weird and weird and weird.

Poetry is cool but I don’t like to write it. Poetry is weird.

A Poem's Roar Roberto M.

A lion roars lions listen

An inspirational poem is respected

same influence

A poem is like a proud lion

A poem gives the influence of a lion

poems rise and fall

giving influence to the people

Just like how animals listen to a lion

People rise for a poem

We all can rise for poetry.

Bam Sami C.

I like poetry because

there are so many ways to make

poetry. Poetry is so cool its like

a car driving as if it had no engine

Poetry is a banana

being stepped on

Poetry is so fantastically funny

and it’s also super sigma

and my head hit the wall

BAM!

Ms. Hernandez's 8th Grade

The Woman at my Window Avery W.

There is a woman knocking at my

window when the sky is grey

She has flowing hair of letters

and a heart of steel and gold

She’ll listen to your worries and

tell you “please say more.”

i hear her singing medleys of

emphasis and sound

Oh poetry

Oh poetry

I miss you when you’re not around

You hold my hand and trace

the letters of unlikely dream

Perhaps you’re just an image who

holds me in her grasp

But however I adore you when

you’re knocking at my glass.

Who Is Poetry Aria M.

They’re a tune that sticks to your brain or

A brief smile on a gloomy day

They are a perspective only they hold

The thoughts you didn’t know you felt

A feeling that doesn’t fade

Once you read them

you can’t let go

Poetry is expressive and free

An opportunity

to finally feel

Rushing Water Ronan H.

Poetry is a river of words

Each flowing its separate ways

Some peaceful like lily pads

others rageful like floods

Each poem brings feelings to the brain

either you feel the author’s feelings

or you make your own

Poetry is like suggestions

Each one interpreted by the reader

Then processed to see if they agree

Poetry is like a river of words

You choose how it flows.

Found Everywhere and Nowhere Chloe S.

From the heart, it speaks

Ink, lead, pixels, whatever it can do.

found everywhere

the paper,

the screen,

the forever folds of flowers,

the amalgamation of wires,

the divine light,

the endless dark,

somewhere,

nowhere,

All tells a story.

if you listen just enough

With an all-seeing eye.
