L.L.

Porque es un gran orgullo ser tu hombre

Hazme un mundo de caramelo

Te presumo

Por que eres para mi un gran tesoro

Llena el aire con algodón

Y quiero estar junto a ti de cualquier modo.

 De repente las alegrías

D.T.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

When I see your face

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow

The bright blessed days, the dark sacred nights

There’s not a thing that I would change

They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know

‘Cause you’re amazing

I see trees of green, red roses too

I went to the HIP mall with my friends

My friends have good traits

I went to Hot Topic and Five Below

I love my teachers they let me grow

I have a good time. It was great!

L. L.

I did fun things in class

Lunch was great, no need for trash

Where I met my ex girlfriend

It was a sad end

I played outside in the grass

After creating visual poem collages using words, phrases, and images I had chosen, I wanted students to have the opportunity to create their own poem collages to represent the self-portrait poems we wrote during our first session together. Using Canva, students used various fonts and images to visually represent themselves in a poem collage. Here are a few of them below!

After analyzing Douglas Kearney’s poem “Of Agricultural Work” we discussed the ways poets can use visual elements within the sizing and placement of words to convey an impactful message. I created a single document full of words in various fonts and sizes, bold, italics etc. associated with general feelings around being at school. Students cut out and arranged them on a new page in their own ways, to demonstrate their feelings and thoughts about being in school.

This week, we explored the intersections of song, visual art and poetry through a lens of ekphrastic witnessing and storytelling. We read the song lyrics of “Vincent” by Don McClean while observing the infamous Starry Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh, and drew connections from lines in the song to how they show up within the painting. We looked at examples of other visual art such as “Madonna” by Elizabeth Catlett and analyzed the emotion and intention behind the artist’s work. Then, we began to imagine ourselves within a scene of our favorite TV show or movie, and students created poems from their perspective as imagined active participants in this show or movie.

“Untitled” by B.E.

Bryce is running through fire and

got out of there alive

I see the exit and there was a road

with water hoses to cool down

the blue fire and I can hear

the people watching

and the sound of noise

and the smell of the building

I taste nothing

and I feel intense.

“Untitled”J.C.

I wake up at the middle of apocalypse

the birds fall from the sky

trees are on fire

the rain is blood instead of water

there is a space ninja hunting

for the world leader.

Together we read and analyzed the concrete poem “Cherry” by Yi Li. We discussed the visual art aspect of the poem and how it lends to the overall meaning of the poem. What begins as a simple poem about cherries, makes a sharp turn into the speaker’s memories of cherries. Students then thought about a food they REALLY dislike and then turned their first memory of it into a quick concrete poem!
